DIY – How To Build a Terra Cotta Fountain in 7 Steps
Building a terra cotta fountain is not as hard as you probably think. It is also very inexpensive if you follow the proper instructions and use proper materials. Here are 7 steps that will make building terra cotta fountain easier:
Step 1. Gathering the materials
In order to built the best terra cotta fountain, you will need the following materials:
- 14-inch Terra Cotta Saucer
- 7-inch terra cotta saucer
- 6-inch terra cotta saucer
- 3 4-inch terra cotta saucers
- 6-inch Terra Cotta flower pot
- 4-inch Terra Cotta flower pot
- Fountain pump
- Plastic tubing for fitting pump’s outlet
- Silicone rubber sealant
- Clear concrete sealer
- Round file
- Drill with 3/8-inch masonry bit
Step 2. Preparing the Flower Pots
Spray the inside of the 14-inch saucer with the clear sealer. Proper water-proofing will be ensured by two coats.
Then, immerse the rest of the saucers and flower pots in a large bucket of water for 1 hour at least.
This will soften the terra cotta material and will make it a breeze to drill holes and file notches.
Step 3. Drilling and Filling
Put the 7-inch saucer over a little block of wood for support and drill a hole in the center for the tubing to be able to pass through.
File four notches in the lip of the 6-inch flower pot. One of the notches has to accommodate the pump’s power cord to pass through and should be larger.
Then, file 4 notches on one of the 4-inch saucers. Then, file a notch on the lip on a slight downward angle with the 7-inch saucer and create a spout for the winter.
Step Four. Attaching the Fountain Pump
Attach the plastic tubing to the fountain pump’s outlet. Turn the 6-inch pot in an upside down position and pass the tubing through. The 7-inch saucer will follow on top and allow the tubing to continue through the hole.
Seal the end of the tube with a clear spray.
Step 5. Installing the Remaining Flower Pots
Now, place the 4-notched 4-inch saucer over the tubing. Then, turn the 4-inch flower pot upside down and set it beside the first column. Match the 6-inch saucer and put it on top.
Take a 4-inch saucer and turn it upside down for the third column and place it next to the second column. The last 4-inch saucer is on top.
Step 6. Filling the Fountain With Water
Fill the base with water until it reaches the top. Then plug the pump into an outlet that is ground fault-protected.
Step 7. Adding the Finishing Touches
Decorate your new terra cotta fountain with potted plants, smooth pebbles, small flower pots, or other unique and creative items. Enjoy in the peaceful sound of trickling water and its visual beauty. Of course, the best feeling is that you created an amazing terra cotta fountain all by yourself.
