How To Easily Get Rid Of Powdery Mildew On Houseplants
Powdery Mildew on Houseplants Powdery
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease on houseplants. It produces circular powdery white spots on the plants’ foliage. The whole plant material is affected when the disease starts spreading with the fluffy white fungus. The fungus affects plants outdoors, yet the indoor powdery mildew is more common. Indoor powdery mildew needs temperatures around 70 F. When there is poor air circulation, low light, powdery mildew arrives and it thrives in drier conditions than the outdoor one. It is essential to control the powdery mildew since it is aggressive.
How to Get Rid of Powdery Mildew
We don’t advise you to mist plants. Don’t wet the foliage when you are watering. Enhance the air flow in your plants by keeping them spaced. If the plant shows some signs of infection, isolate it in order to prevent powdery mildew. Common plants affected by indoor powdery mildew include:
- African violet
If powdery mildew on houseplants is present on all specimens and cultural control is not effective, advance to chemical control. Powdery mildew treatment indoors may be achieved with common household ingredients. Water the plants well from under the foliage, then apply a spray of 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap and 1 gallon of water. You may also add 1 tablespoon of horticultural oil to help the mixture adhere to the fungus. Apply to the top and bottom of the foliage to get all the fungal areas. Using this powdery mildew control indoors is safe and non-toxic and effective on some, but not all, species of plants.
Fungicides for Powdery Mildew on Houseplants
If all of this fails, then use a household fungicide and kill the spores. By doing this you will prevent spreading of indoor powdery mildew. It is important to read the label carefully since there is a risk of toxicity in any preparation you buy. We advise you to apply any fungicidal spray outside to prevent drift of the particles in your house. You can also use neem oil on your houseplants as an alternative.
