Would You Like To Help Your Plants Grow Better? Use Diapers and Improve Your Overall Health in The Garden

Garden 28

Have you ever heard of this? Using disposable diapers in containers, or for  better plant growth is, believe it or not, very beneficial and can keep your potting soil from drying out. It will especially help you during dry weather when your containers need frequent irrigation. Just keep in mind, we are talking about fresh and clean diapers.

Diaper Filling for Moisture Control

Did you ever think how disposable diapers hold so much liquid? These highly absorbable diapers container hydrogel – it is the same thing you can buy in gardening stores, and it is usually labeled as water retention crystals. Each crystal of them swells up like a sponge, and keeps in moisture. This is why helping your plants grow with diapers is really plausible. Hydrogels are also very effective in high-tech bandages, and are usually used for burns or severe scrapes and abrasions.

How to Use Diaper Gel in Plant Soil

It is advisable to use diapers in containers, and start with the cheapest diapers at your local  box store. Then, tear open a diaper and put the contents in a mixing bowl. Don’t pick out the little cottony bits because they absorb water, as well. Add water just until you have a thick gel, then mix in equal parts of potting soil. Put them in a pot and you’re ready to plant. If you don’t want to experience ripping into the diapers, simply peel away the layer that is against baby’s bottom, and after this place the whole diaper in the bottom of a container, with the plastic side facing down. If the container is large, you might require more than one diaper. Make sure to make a couple of holes in the plastic so the potting soil can drain; if you don’t do this, you may end up with root rot – a disease that is often connected to death of plants.

Is the Use of Diapers for Plant Growth Healthy?

You don’t need to be a chemist proffesional to understand that hydrogels are not natural materials.  Even though a diaper  probably won’t hurt a thing, it isn’t the best idea to use them too much because the chemicals, that may contain carcinogens and neurotoxins, will eventually leach into the soil. Moreover, using diaper filling for moisture control isn’t advisable if you’re growing vegetables in containers.
